Transforming vicarious trauma into vicarious resilience

  • In the helping professions, educators and practitioners often encounter individuals with stories of suffering, loss, and trauma, which can lead to vicarious trauma—an emotional and psychological response to bearing witness to others' trauma. However, this experience can also be a gateway to vicarious resilience, where one finds strength and inspiration from witnessing others' courage and recovery.

This presentation delves into the duality of vicarious trauma and vicarious resilience, exploring how professionals can harness these experiences to foster sustainable compassion and resilience. It will cover methods for recognizing and managing vicarious trauma, emphasizing self-care and professional support.

Participants will learn practical tools to build their own resilience, enabling them to thrive despite the challenges inherent in their work. By transforming the potential negative impacts of vicarious trauma into positive growth opportunities, this presentation aims to equip helping professionals with the skills needed to continue their vital work with renewed energy and a deepened sense of purpose.
